Public Liability Insurance - compulsory in SA?

Hi,

I'm a driver from QLD, but I'm researching Public Liability insurance as I'm driving for multiple companies up here (Uber & Muve).

I understand PL was made compulsory in SA back in 2016, but I've also been told Uber has it's own "contingency" policy which means I don't need PL insurance of my own anyway. I know there are multiple brokers who offer Rideshare PL insurance now, starting around $40/mth for $5M liability.

1. Is PL insurance compulsory in SA?
2. Do drivers submit proof of this to Uber or any other companies?
