More than 50,000 Aussies who use the service to make extra cash ferrying passengers around will now be required to collect and pay GST to the government, after Uber lost a landmark legal battle with the Australian Taxation Office.

It is RSDU’s opinion Uber may seek to appeal the decision, as this ruling may considerably complicate the life of drivers, creating too much red tape. Ultimately jeopardizing Uber’s business model of being a fun part time after work gig for most drivers.
It is also RSDU’s opinion that the ruling may affect official work relationships between Uber and its so called “partner” drivers, further helping Uber to get away with its sham contracting arrangements as drives are now classified “self employed” by the court.
